A good carpet freshener can not only help you maintain a clean carpet, but one that will help keep it smelling clean.

Combine 2 table spoons of corn starch with ¼ cup perfumed talcum powder and ¾ cup of baking soda.

Sprinkle it on the dry carpet and let the powdered mixture stand for 15 minutes, before vacuuming it up, leaving your carpet smelling clean and fresh.

For pet urine, dab the area with a towel, then wash the contaminated area with the suds of a liquid dish detergent, then rinsing it with 1/2 cup vinegar diluted in a quart of warm water. This will disinfect the affected area.

After disinfecting, lay dry cloth or paper towels on the disinfected spot and weight down to absorb excess moisture by letting it stand for 4 to 6 hours.

After removing the towels, brush up nap and allow the carpet to dry completely, using an electric fan could also speed up the drying process.

Stains are also one of the common problems of floor carpets and getting rid of it right away is best for carpets, otherwise it will become permanent and impossible to remove.

Immediately after the carpet is stained, try to remove the excess liquid or stain from the carpet by dabbing it with a terry cloth.

Use caution and always be careful when removing loose debris but not rubbing it into the carpet since rubbing could damage it.

With a 1:1 solution of warm water and vinegar, remove the stain by placing the solution and spraying it onto the stained surface, then blot the stain with a dry terry cloth to remove it.

Repeat the process as necessary until the stain is removed. If the vinegar solution is not enough to remove the stain, try adding a couple of teaspoons of baking soda to the mixture and spray onto the stained area.

The baking soda will create a chemical reaction with the vinegar that will reactivate the stain and remove them from the carpeting.

Pet odor can also cause a headache, especially if it sticks to the carpet and may be difficult to remove.

But worry no more, that lowly bottle of baking soda sitting on your kitchen shelf and gathering cobwebs can be the solution to that problem.

Simply sprinkle several tablespoons of baking soda on the affected area of the carpet and let it stand for 10 to 15 minutes, make sure that the area is dry.

Vacuum the baking soda after it and make sure to remove the remaining baking soda powder on the carpet.

Do not use ammonia to clean the carpet or bleach solutions. Ammonia will attract pets to continue staining the carpet since it may associate the smell of ammonia with urine, while bleach solutions could discolor the carpet.

Sometimes, all it takes is a practical and good understanding of how common household things work and are usually helpful in helping us save money, with these homemade carpet cleaning supplies, sometimes the dreaded incidents on carpets could just be addressed with a short walk to the kitchen shelf.
